When you are truly immersed in reading ( something which often happens to me, I can sit in a place and read and so complete can be my attention that I am almost immune to other sight, smell or sound, though I find that this acuity is diminishing with age) you become one with the words.  In such a state, there is that singular joy in what you read because there is something which has touched you and left you with a feeling which is beyond the words on the page, for there is emotion beyond words, there are pictures and there is imagination, there is color if you think of it and even sound, in short it is as if you are experiencing all this yourself.
